The NeuroConferenfes took place at ECS between 03-05 December 2015. The event was based on the convergence of two facts: (i) modern societies pose a great challenge for neuroscience research as the population ages which is accompanied by an increase in several neurological and psychiatric disease with still relatively poor therapeutic interventions and (ii) modern life styles are considered also to be relatively stressful for most individuals and stress is also recognized as a trigger factor for several neurological and psychiatry disorders.

During the event 51 participants had the opportunity to discuss with renowned speakers from different fields.

Cristina Ferreira, a 3rd year student, and Raquel Rocha Afonso, a recent graduate, from our Medical School were selected for oral presentations at the AMEE Congress 2015 (Association for Medical Education in Europe) in Scotland (September 05 to 09).

Cristina Ferreira presented “Factors influencing the career intentions of medical students”, concluding that the medical specialty preferences of medical students suffer unexpected changes in the first three years of the degree. Raquel Rocha Afonso explored variables that influence the involvement of doctors in scientific research, demonstrating the key role of voluntary engagement of medical students in research activities during the degree.

The presentations resulted from scientific research undertaken as part of the study plan of the Medical degree at the University of Minho, "Option Project I" and "Option Project - Final Training", respectively. These curricular units allow students the development of complementary areas to the curriculum of the course, enabling the development of his scientific interests. The projects were developed within the ICVS’s Research in Education pilot Line.
